Revised Article 7 of the Indiana Code Avaliable

Article 7 of the Indiana Code is the law that covers special education in the State of Indiana. In the 2008 Legislative Season this law was revised and went into effect on August 13, 2008. If your child is enrolled in a public school in Indiana, it is essential to review the changes to the Indiana Code. As a parent when do I need to ask for a new IEP meeting?

If everything is on track your school should have a Fall and Spring meeting called a case conference every year. In this conference the school will work with you to go over your child's Individual Education Plan (IEP), create new goals, and discuss any issues. If your child is not having any problems with the goals in the plan and is making progress there is no need to have additional meetings. However, if you notice that your child is failing to progress, is developing behavioral or other negative traits, or is falling behind, than new goals or a behavioral plan may need to be discussed. Many schools are more than willing to accomodate parents to help work out these situations. The best thing to do is simply to contact your child's teacher or principal and ask for a new program to be put in place.
